ABOUT ME

  • LinkedIn

I have always been an entrepreneur – a vocation I learned from my father.

I spent the early part of my career in sales and marketing, first with a multinational consumer goods manufacturer, later with a small publishing company. I then moved to the technology sector, where I mostly worked in finance and administration. I co-founded two companies: one that created training materials for sophisticated computer systems, another that made software development tools. After that, I had the good fortune to be an early hire at a startup company that created revolutionary enterprise networking systems, which grew to almost a billion dollars in sales in eight years. That company was then acquired by a large British telecommunications company, where I continued to work for almost four years.

Next, I co-founded a consulting company where I worked for 11 years, assisting clients in the private and not-for-profit sectors with strategic planning, business development, marketing, and capital formation. Along the way I spent 18 years on the board of a large nonprofit media arts center, including five years as Board President.

Most recently, I served eight years as Executive Director of a nonprofit arts-focused educational organization for and about LGBTQIA+ youth, whose programs provide young people safe space and community, develop youth leaders, create safer school environments, and increase understanding of marginalized communities.

I am now working as a freelance consultant in the not-for-profit sector.

I hold a B.B.A. and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, and an M.B.A. from Duquesne University.  I am a retired NAUI Divemaster, a novice baker and pizzaiolo, and an avid photographer (SethRosenbergPhotography.com). I live on Pittsburgh’s Northside with my spouse Rebecca King and our dogs Spencer and Luna.

COMPETENCIES

Services

Interim & Part-time Management

Project Management

Development

Sometimes you need a senior executive for a short period of time – maybe while a search is conducted to fill a vacancy. Sometimes you only have need, or budget, for a part-time senior person. I can provide the exact amount of senior-level management you need, for as long as you need it.

Bandwidth on demand. Your staff is already stretched thin. When opportunities – or necessities – to take on special projects present themselves, I can provide the additional capacity you need. I have managed projects of all sizes and durations. I have coordinated teams spread across the country, and separated by an ocean. I can help.

Grant writing and administration, special events, donor appeal campaigns – I have experience with them all. I also have an entrepreneur’s eye for earned income opportunities that are “on mission.”

Strategic Planning

Process Creation
and Refinement

Board/Staff Relations Counseling

I think strategically, I think tactically, I think critically. I have led and/or participated in dozens of strategic planning processes; it can be an extremely valuable exercise. Still, the plans that are produced start going stale as soon as they are completed. Not only can I help you create a plan, I can also help you set up the systems and processes necessary to keep the plan up to date and implementation on schedule.

Thinking of hiring a new employee to launch a new initiative – maybe a development role? Before you do, let me help you put in place the strategies and processes that will allow your new hire to become effective immediately. I can even help you find the right person, once those systems are in place. Have a  program, function, or department that isn’t operating the way you’d like? Maybe a fresh set of eyes would provide new perspective.

I understand how boards operate, how staffs operate, and how they (should) collaborate with each other. I’ve spent time on both sides of the equation. I also understand that things don't always work the way they should. The balance is not easy to maintain and sometimes it helps to have a neutral facilitator who can empathize with all points of view.
